“Slow driving nowhere but the two of us.”
I was asked to do a commission for a friend’s new song, Slow Drive. I asked him how he would describe it as a brief. These were his words:
“It’s about being with the person you love, without a care in the world where you’re going, how long it’s taking, where the destination is… the only thing that matters is that you’re together…”
The peg was two people holding hands in the car, but I knew I wanted more from it. I wanted it to be a reflection (quite literal lol) of the feeling of having a romantic road trip but at the same time I wanted to make the viewer feel distant from the scene because that moment is a private one between two people in love. We’re spectators and we don’t see the whole picture but we understand what’s happening. And the rear view mirror synecdoche gives that sense of travel to nowhere.
